The books of account of a business should generally be kept at the principal place of business or profession (i.e. where the business or profession is generally carried on).
The books of account and other relevant documents must be preserved for a minimum period of six years from the end of the relevant assessment year.
Failure to maintain books of account or retain them for the prescribed period can lead to penalties under the Income Tax Act.
